Four Kanji Idioms

Yojijukugo (四字熟語) is a Japanese lexeme consisting of four kanji. In everyday practice these phrases are used like idioms in English. The meaning is much more than the sum of their component kanji.

We have selected a few of our favorite yojijukugo and put them front and center.

Natives speakers know these phrases from literature, poetry or occasional conversational use. As a tourist or temporary resident you’ll share something with the strangers around you, either insights into yourself, or a unique view of the world.
