About This Project

Japanifornia is a project that exists between the complementary cultures of Japan and California. We live in the space between the two locations—including multiple stops around the Pacific Rim and Hawaii—and we love everything about our dual lifestyles. Please follow us on social media and let us know what you think.

Four Kanji Idioms

Yojijukugo (四字熟語) is a Japanese lexeme consisting of four kanji. In everyday practice these phrases are used like idioms in English. The meaning is much more than the sum of their component kanji.

We have selected a few of our favorite yojijukugo and put them front and center.

In the States, most likely you will be the only one in the room that will know what it means—so we’ve tried to be clever about the phrases we choose. It’ll be our little secret,

Some of these are bold and provocative, and some are just simply wise. You choose.

Natives speakers know these phrases from literature, poetry or occasional conversational use. As a tourist or temporary resident you’ll share something with the strangers around you, either insights into yourself, or a unique view of the world.
