The Shogun Warriors series was published by Marvel Comics between February 1979 and September 1980 and followed the journey of three giant robots and their human operators as they battled evil. With 20 issues in total, the series was created by a mysterious group called the Followers of the Light and was loved by fans for its epic battles and larger-than-life characters.
Between February 1979 and July 1979, Marvel had the comic book rights to both Godzilla and the Shogun Warriors. Although the characters never crossed paths in their respective comics, they were both created by the same artist, Herb Trimpe, who drew a variation of Godzilla and Rodan alongside the Shogun Warriors in a comic book advertisement soliciting the Shogun Warrior toys.
In April 1980, Shogun Warriors #15 was a fill-in written by Steven Grant with art by Mike Vosburg, and the series took a dramatic turn with Shogun Warriors #16 in May 1980. The Shogun Warriors’ mentors were destroyed by the Primal One and his followers, who believed that Earth’s technology had outpaced its morality and that it was their duty to destroy the Shogun Warriors and other powerful humans.
Unfortunately, declining sales and the writer’s commitment to writing the Moon Knight comic book series led Marvel to cancel the Shogun Warriors series. The three giant robots were destroyed off-panel, but the Fantastic Four and the robots’ pilots learned about the Samurai Destroyer, a giant robot built from an abandoned fourth robot that was never finished.
